Acne control and treatment options for scars
Spots and acne can erupt at the most unwelcome time, they can destroy your
confidence and make you feel unattractive. It’s bad enough suffering from spots and
acne but once you’ve managed to get on top of an outbreak you are often then left with
tell tale scarring and blemishes.
We’re going to run through some options of how we can help you with your outbreaks
and also reduce the appearance of scars and blemishes.
First of all, there is no difference between spots and acne. Greasy skin, blackheads,
whiteheads, pustules, cysts and scarring in varying degrees of severity are all signs of
acne. It is very common in the younger age groups between 13 and 30, but can occur at
any age, and most often occurs on the face, neck, back and chest.
Causes
Because most outbreaks happen in puberty, hormones play a big part in acne
development, but hereditary factors, such as greasy skin can also play a part. Diets high
in sugars and using cosmetics that block your pores, especially if you forget to take it off
before bed can also make things worse.
Self help
We know it’s tempting but try not to pick or squeeze your spots but don’t, this can
cause more inflammation and make you more likely to end up with enlarged
pores and scarring
If you use makeup try and find some that is oil free and remember to remove it
before bed!! Use a gentle cleanser or oil free product
How can we help?
Peels
There are a number of medical peels that can help with acne and scarring. Each
peel has different ingredients that help with different things, such as the bacteria
that makes acne worse, they also remove the build up of skin cells to give you a
clearer skin. One of our nurses will assess you and advise which peel would be
best for you. For the peel to work more successfully you will need a course of
peels usually starting at once a week then reducing to monthly to keep on top of
your problem.
Microneedling
Once we have managed to get on top of your outbreak microneedling can really
help with reducing the appearance of those left over scars and blemishes. It also
helps reduce enlarged pores and helps fight that annoying oily skin.
Microneedling involves tiny needles on a pen or roller penetrating the skin,
causing tiny injuries which breaks down the scar tissue and reboots the cells to
make new, nicer looking ones!. It sounds a bit painful but honestly it isn’t and if
you really want to we can put on a bit of local anaesthetic cream first. We can
use just the technique of microneedling but can also add in some specific skin
cocktails which can help even more. The cocktails are able to penetrate deeper
into your skin through the channels created by the microneedling.
As with the peels a course and maintenance of the treatment helps keep on top
of your skin problems and helps to make those days when you don’t want to
leave your house because of your skin a thing of the past!
