Cryotherapy is the use of low temperatures for the removal of skin imperfections, including warts, verrucae and skin tags. Procedures typically last from 5 to 25 seconds, so you can be in and out of the clinic very quickly (consultation and treatment typically takes just 15 minutes). Our highly trained nurses at one of our clinics in Chesterfield, Newark and Nottingham, use the excellent CryoPen™ system to provide effective cryotherapy treatments.

The CryoPen™ emits a fine jet of nitrous oxide under high pressure, which allows the practitioner to work with millimetre precision. This destroys the tissue by freezing the inter-cellular fluid, forming ice shards and crystals which rupture the membrane, thereby destroying the cell. That means there will be no collateral damage to healthy tissue.

What is cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy or extreme cold, is created from a pressure jet of nitrous oxide to painlessly and safely destroy unwanted, benign and superficial lesions on the surface of the skin, such as warts, skin tags, verrucae, milia, cherry angiomas, scars, and resistant hyperpigmentation.

How long do results cryotherapy last?

Results will be permanent however for certain conditions additional treatment may be required.

Is the procedure painful?

A slight tingling sensation may be experienced on application of the cryotherapy.

Is cryotherapy safe?

All treatments carry a degree of risk. Rarely sores and blisters where the lesion was treated may occur. Your practitioner may recommend topical or oral pain killers to relieve discomfort if required.

Are there any side effects to cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is relatively low risk. There are a few side effects that may occur as a result of treatment, including:

  • Pigmentary changes (hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation) if this happens skin colour normally returns after a few months.
  • Nerve damage (particularly in areas where nerves lie close to the surface of the skin, on fingers, wrist, area behind the ear) Reports show that normal sensitivity returns after a few months.
  • Shards of frozen ice (minor shards of frozen ice may blow out, that will thaw on contact with healthy skin).
  • Hair follicle damage and permanent alopecia (especially when treating area on sites with coarse terminal hair).
