Treatment options for tear troughs
If the eyes are the windows to the soul, then fresh-looking eyes are one of the main ways our faces appear healthy and youthful. Tear troughs, however, can make our eyes look tired even when we’re feeling wide awake.
A tear trough is a line or dark shadow that appears under the eyes that develops as we age. It is a groove around the tear duct area that can be hereditary or caused by lifestyle factors.
Non-surgical treatments such as under eye filler or tear trough filler can diffuse these dark areas and smooth out lines beneath the eyes.
Why do I have tear troughs?
Pronounced tear troughs tend to make us look tired no matter how much sleep we might be getting. A tear trough is caused by a lack of volume under the eye, an area that has naturally thin skin to begin with.
The crescent moon hollows can appear sunken as the lack of structure pulls this thin tissue down, revealing the underlying muscle and blood vessels.
How do tear trough fillers work?
Tear trough fillers are injected into the under-eye area and work by plumping the skin and improving the volume and structure to reduce any darkness. Rather than creating a shadow, light reflects naturally off the area.
Tear trough fillers work best for people with volume loss in the under-eye region. They can also sometimes be effective in the treatment of puffy bags. The procedure will not work if the dark areas beneath your eyes are caused by skin pigmentation.
How long do the results last?
As the skin is very delicate around the eyes, injections are very gentle and may be done over two sessions. Usually, only one injection on either side will be needed as the filler will reach the whole area from a single entry.
The results will usually last for one or two years, but sometimes a follow-up treatment will be required to continue the improvement in appearance.
You should notice a difference right away. Because you are awake during the procedure, you will usually be able to see the changes happening right before your eyes. You might have a little swelling and bruising in the under-eye area for 24 to 48 hours.
