Maskne: causes and treatments -

The new normal, as we call it, requires that we wear masks every time we are in public areas to protect ourselves from the virus, but this has wreaked out havoc on our skin. If you have been experiencing increased irritation, inflammation, clogged pores, and blemishes around the nose, cheeks, and chin, then you are probably suffering from maskne. Maskne is acne caused by prolonged use of face masks, and here is what you should know about it.

Causes

Skin cells do not shed properly under a mask

Our skin sheds dead cells throughout the day. When you have a mask on, these cells have nowhere to go. They stay on the skin and ultimately find their way to your pores. They clog pores, increase inflammation, and cause blemishes.

Increased humidity around the chin area

Breathing underneath a mask creates a humid and hot environment. Bacteria flourish in such environments, and that is why you are experiencing regular breakouts around the mouth area.

Treatments

Find a mask that fits your face properly

A well-sized mask should fit comfortably around the sides of your face and the nose. You should also be able to talk without your lips rubbing on the mask. If you can, avoid wearing make-up underneath your mask, as this could clog your pores further. Also, make sure the fabric of your mask is breathable. Cotton is a great option, but if you get a washable mask, use fragrance-free detergent so that you don’t irritate the skin further.

Keep your face clean

Wash your face two times a day, morning and evening. Use a cleanser with benzoyl peroxide, 5% is enough, if you can find one. Massage the face gently and leave the cleanser on for a few minutes before rinsing.

Exfoliate

Gentle exfoliation of the skin will help get rid of the dead skin and unclog pores. You can use exfoliating toners or chemical exfoliants that contain salicylic acid or glycolic acid. If your acne persists, you can try our facial peels. They contain mandelic acid, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and lactic acid. These ingredients exfoliate the damaged layer of skin, stimulating the growth of new skin cells. This treatment will not only help with the acne, but it will also reduce the appearance of blemishes and fine lines.
